Web retail giant Amazon boosted its commitment to wind energy by signing deals to take power from 229MW of projects in Ireland, Sweden and the US.

Its Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centre unit will take 91MW of output from wind farms in Donegal, Ireland, and Bäckhammar, Sweden, and from a 47MW project in Tehachapi, California.

The three wind farms are due to come online in 2020 and 2021.

AWS has already signed up for nine other renewables projects and the wider Amazon business has a clean-energy portfolio above 1GW.

Amazon and other technology giants such as Google, Facebook and Apple have been among the pioneers of signing corporate power deals with renewable energy projects, initially in the US but increasingly now in Europe.
