Sales in Alstom’s coal and gas divisions have been pinched by the recession, with the firm citing a lack of large projects on the horizon as its customers postpone taking investment decisions in new power plants.

The 4,000 jobs will be cut before March 2012, but activities at Alstom Hydro and Alstom Wind “are not part of this plan”.

Last week the Paris-based firm announced its first ever sale of wind turbines in the booming Turkish market.
