The continent could install up to 101GW of wind in the next 15 years, Irena says in its Africa 2030 report. PV could contribute 55GW, including 24GW of distributed generation, with concentrating solar power (CSP) reaching 38GW.

Achieving those figures will require $381bn of investment to help meet electricity demand that is expected to triple by 2030.

North Africa will have to shoulder most of the burden, Irena believes, by investing $218bn in non-hydro renewables by 2030.
