Most European offshore wind farms could face the $500m cable problem flagged last month by Orsted – and insurance companies may refuse to pay out unless operators make efforts to tackle the problem now, warned a major insurer of renewable energy projects.

The cable protection failure that could need rectifying at 10 of the Danish group’s projects is almost certainly not an Orsted-only issue, even though it is the only company to have so far put it in the public domain, said Fraser McLachlan, CEO of GCube.
