The finding allows DOI’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to move forward with its process for considering the Wind Energy Area (WEA) lease sales.

The WEAs, which total approximately 307,590 acres (1,245sq km) include Kitty Hawk (about 122,405 acres), Wilmington West (about 51,595 acres) and Wilmington East WEA (about 133,590 acres).

“After considering public input and conducting a thorough environmental review, we believe that wind leasing and site characterization activities can be done in a manner that will continue to allow for other uses, and be compatible with the environment,” says BOEM Director Abigail Ross Hopper.
