With the new legislation the Argentine renewable energy sector, which has stalled for lack of financing and clear incentives, hopes to get back on track and exploit the country's huge wind potential –  believed to be 2,000GW – and to develop solar resources estimated at over 2,000kWh per sq metre.

The failure of the country's original 2006 renewable energy programme has been clear for some years, as wind installations inched slowly to just over 200MW – less that 1% of total installed national power capacity – while solar is only at 8MW, well below the 8% target set in the original 2006 text.
