Gamesa, whose shares were almost 17% higher in mid-afternoon trading in Madrid, rapidly issued a statement to investors saying no agreement has been signed – but did not deny that talks were underway.

“The company regularly analyses the various strategic opportunities presented for the group,” it said.

The statement came after Spanish newspaper El Confidencial said Siemens has hired Deutsche Bank to look at a possible bid for Gamesa and has discussed the matter with Iberdrola, the Spanish energy giant that is a major shareholder in its compatriot turbine maker.
