The decision by the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) “represents a significant milestone in the development of critical electric infrastructure in the Southwest United States,” says SunZia spokesman Ian Calkins.

SunZia, whose sponsors include Salt River Project, Shell Wind Energy and Tucson Electric Power, will now seek similar approval from regulators in neighboring New Mexico to the east.

It expects to apply for a construction permit there by early this summer with the approval process by the New Mexico Public Utility Commission to take between 60 and 90 days.
