The lithium-ion-based system was built by the storage-technology specialist Younicos for power supplier WEMAG in the northern German city of Schwerin.

Younicos CTO Clemens Triebel said the fully-automated battery system could provide the type of grid stabilisation that is currently mostly carried out by coal plants in the region.

Triebel claimed: “Our 5MW battery in Schwerin provides the same control power as a conventional 50MW turbine.”
