Vestas veteran Johnny Thomsen has been named co-CEO of offshore wind turbine-maker MHI Vestas, replacing Lars Bondo Krogsgaard, who has resigned the post after a year to “explore other opportunities”.

Thomsen, who comes in to new role after 15 years at the Danish OEM, most recently as senior vice president of product management, has been in the wind industry for more than two decade years, including with sector pioneer NEG-Micon.

“Johnny combines substantial understanding and experience of the MHI Vestas platform with business acumen,” said chairman of the MHI Vestas board of directors Anders Runevad, who recently stepped down from the CEO role at Vestas.

“We believe that as MHI Vestas continues its growth into new markets, having a Co-CEO that has executive management experience in product strategy and go-to-market planning and execution will ensure that the company will remain at the forefront of the offshore wind industry.”

Runevad said he “regretted but respected” Krogsgaard’s decision to step down and thanked for having “played an important role in the company and [being] instrumental in expanding our business to Asia and the US.

Krogsgaard joined MHI Vestas in 2018, after a career with wind sector mainstays including Nordex-Acciona, Siemens and Danish developer Orsted (then Dong), where he was head of renewables.
