Vestas has won a 415MW deal to equip the Dumat Al Jandal project in Saudi Arabia, the kingdom’s first utility-scale wind farm and a landmark in the region.
The Danish turbine OEM will deliver and install 99 of its V150 4.2MW machines under an EPC deal with co-developers EDF Renewables and Masdar, which won the right to build the project in a Saudi government tender after lodging an ultra-low bid equivalent to $21.20/MWh.
Vestas – which also secured a 20-year service agreement – did not specify a schedule for the wind farm which will supply power under a 20-year PPA.
Dumat Al Jandal will be the first large wind project in Saudi Arabia but certainly not the last – the oil-rich kingdom earlier this year unveiled targets of 16GW of wind and 40GW of PV for 2030.
It emerged earlier today that Abu Dhabi-headquartered renewables investment group Plambeck Emirates has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Italian offshore contractor Saipem to build a 500MW floating wind farm in the Persian Gulf off Saudi Arabia.
