Chinese oil major CNOOC has officially fired the starting pistol on its offshore wind ambitions with the launch of CNOOC Renewable Energy Company, which Recharge has learned could cooperate with turbine-maker Shanghai Electric to help its entry into the sector.

CNOOC – China's third-largest oil and gas group, and its leading offshore hydrocarbon producer – has tasked the unit with leading wind development by first "putting out feelers in shallow water, then speeding up development in deep water", said the company at a launch event.
