Siemens Gamesa is in the frame for an order from Swancor Renewable Energy and Macquarie Capital to supply 47 of its SG8.0-167 turbines for the 376MW Formosa 2 wind project off Taiwan.

The contract is subject to the consortium's final investment decision.

“We are delighted to continue our close collaboration with Swancor and Macquarie in Taiwan, which started on Formosa 1, Taiwan’s very first offshore wind power project,” said Niels Steenberg, executive general manager of Siemens Gamesa Offshore for Asia-Pacific.

“Siemens Gamesa is committed to the success of those early developments, which will lay the foundations for a prosperous and sustainable offshore wind industry in the market.”

The German-Spanish OEM has already supplied the machines for the 8MW Formosa 1 pilot – Taiwan’s first installed offshore turbines – and is supplying them for the 120MW Formosa 1 phase two array, which is slated to be completed later this year.

Offshore construction at Formosa 2 is slated to begin in 2020.

The project off Miaoli county is part of a first batch of 5.5GW in projects tendered off last year that are slated to come online by 2025.

The contract includes a full servicing of the turbines for 20 years, including the provision of spare parts and tools to help ensure the reliability and optimal performance of the power plant.

Dutch installer Jan de Nul was awarded the engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) of both foundations and subsea cables at Formosa 2 in water depths of up to 55 metres.

Construction works are planned to start in 2020 and the wind farm is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2021.

“Being awarded the Formosa 2 EPCI contract is a very important next step for Jan De Nul Group in the growing Taiwanese offshore wind market," said Peter De Pooter, manager offshore renewables at Jan de Nul.

The company is also installing the 120MW Formosa 1 project, and the 109.2MW Changhua offshore wind project.
