The head of Brazil’s National Development Bank (BNDES), Joaquim Levy, has resigned following personal criticism from President Jair Bolsonaro, as the country’s six-year political and economic crises deepened.

Far-right Bolsonaro rebuked Levy, whom he has accused of disloyalty, for choosing Marcos Pinto, who had served in centre-left Workers Party's 2002-2016 national governments, as the bank’s capital markets director.

Bolsonaro told reporters on 15 June that “he had had it up to here” with Levy, moving his hand along his neck to suggest water reaching the brim of a vessel – which in Brazil also denotes when patience is reaching a limit.
