Wind power old and new crossed paths recently as the Royal Spanish Navy vessel Juan Sebastián de Elcano sailed past Iberdrola’s 350MW Wikinger project off Germany.

The wind farm — the biggest in the Baltic and one of the ten largest in Europe — was inaugurated last autumn, and has now been certified by advisory body DNV GL for “safe and reliable power generation”.

Located in the Exclusive Economic Zone off the German island of Rügen, Winkinger is powered by Siemens Gamesa (formerly Adwen) 5MW AD 5-135 turbines.

The certification was carried out according to the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency.
