Vestas was top dog for global wind turbine orders for the fourth quarter running, as it scooped the largest share of a record Q1 for the industry, said Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables.
The Danish OEM giant continued its success “in multiple rating segments” as the only Western producer to have two models in the onshore turbine top-10 for the January-March period, according to latest data from the research group.
"The V150-4.X and V120-2.2 turbines both ranked in the top five onshore turbine models ordered in Q1, as Vestas won more than 500MW of orders in North America, Latin America and APAC,” said Luke Lewandowski, Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables director.
Vestas’ success came amid a 7% year-on-year upswing in global turbine orders, adding 875MW to last year’s Q1 record, as strong growth in the Americas and China offset falling demand in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said Wood Mackenzie.
Larger turbines in the 4MW range continued their inroads into the market, said Wood Mackenzie. “The Vestas V150-4.X and Siemens SG 4.5-145 models recorded the most order capacity, respectively, in Q1, with Nordex’s N149/4X00 also in the top 10 ranking for onshore turbine models.”
The other big story of the quarter was a boom in Chinese offshore wind orders – a record 1.7GW of firm deals – as the nation’s market gathers pace.
Lewandowski said: "Five Chinese OEMs each won 300MW-plus of offshore orders in China as pressure mounts to comply with provincial grid-connection targets in China for offshore. This resulted in Chinese OEMs accounting for 77% of all offshore capacity ordered globally.”
European offshore wind yielded a single 487MW order in Q1.
