German wind turbine OEM Enercon has signed a contract to equip the largest onshore wind farm in the Netherlands, the €400m ($446m) Windpark Zeewolde repowering project in the central Dutch province of Flevoland.

Construction of 91 Enercon turbines at the 320MW-plus project is slated to start in the autumn of this year, the developer of Windpark Zeewolde said.

Swedish utility Vattenfall earlier this week said it will buy the electricity from the upgraded project under a power purchase agreement, while Deutsche Windtechnik unit OutSmart will operate it.

“We are convinced that with these partners, we can build the wind farm well and fast, and also manage it in the long run,” said the project’s managing director Sjoerd Sieburgh Sjoerdsma.

The 91 Enercon turbines will replace the current 220 machines spinning at the wind farm, with commissioning foreseen for late 2021.

Enercon will supply 20 of its E-138 EP3 E2 4.2 MW turbines, 33 of its E-126 EP3 4MW model, 21 of its E-115 EP3 E3 4.2MW machines, and another 9 of its E-103 EP2 E2 2.35MW turbines.

ABB will supply the transformer stations for the project.

Project developer Windpark Zeewolde says the wind farm is also Europe’s largest development to be owned by farmers and local citizens.
