Manulife’s John Hancock division will acquire sizeable minority stakes in a 1.2GW slice of Duke Energy Renewables’ wind, solar and battery storage portfolio, as Canadian institutional investors continue expanding their presence in the high-growth US clean energy sector.

Under a “definitive” agreement announced by Duke, its competitive energy business (DER) will sell a 49% stake in 37 operating wind, solar and batter storage assets and 33% of 11 other operating solar assets to the John Hancock Infrastructure Fund and John Hancock Life Insurance Company (US).
