Natural gas remained top dog in 2018 among energy sources in new US generation capacity build and expansion, even as fast-growth wind and solar continued to grab market share from coal, according to preliminary Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) data.

Developers installed 20GW of natural gas power capacity nationwide versus 12.53GW in 2017 and 8.78GW in 2016, an upward trend driven by a surge in low-cost production from shale formations found in 16 states led by North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Texas.
