Spanish renewables champion Iberdrola has named MHI Vestas as preferred supplier for its 476MW Baltic Eagle project off the German island of Rügen.

The project, slated for delivery and installation in 2022 and 2023, will be the first offshore wind farm to feature the V174-9.5 MW turbine from MHI Vestas.

“We are extremely proud to launch our V174-9.5 MW turbine with the Baltic Eagle project,” said MHI Vestas chief executive Philippe Kavafyan.

“This will be a tremendous opportunity for MHI Vestas to deepen our experience in German waters and notably in the Baltic Sea.”

The V174-9.5MW is based on MHI Vestas's V164-9.5MW turbine but outfitted with longer blades. Last summer MHI Vestas patented several models with the V174 prefix.

The OEM in September 2018 also unveiled a further upscaled version of the platform with a rating of 10MW, reported exclusively in Recharge

The announcement is the second preferred supplier agreement between Iberdrola and MHI Vestas since November last year, when the two companies signed a similar agreement for the 800MW Vineyard Wind project off the US East Coast.

“Baltic Eagle confirms the company’s firm commitment to use technological innovation to deliver utility-scale renewable projects which combat climate change and foster economic and social development in the territories where we operate,” said Xabier Viteri, director of Iberdrola's renewables business.

Baltic Eagle will be the third German offshore wind project for MHI Vestas, following the recently installed Borkum Riffgrund 2 and Deutsche Bucht, scheduled for installation this year.

Iberdrola last year had was successful with Baltic Eagle in a German offshore wind tender with a bid price of €64.60 per megawatt hour. The Spanish utility early last week had completed the construction of the nearby 350MW Wikinger array.

Largest Baltic Sea offshore complex

The company had launched the main geotechnical campaign at Baltic Eagle last summer, and says all necessary design and contracting activities for the main components are progressing according to the project programme.

Together with Wikinger and its small extension Wikinger Süd, Baltic Eagle will form a 836MW offshore wind complex, the largest in the Baltic Sea with a joint investment of €2.5bn ($2.8bn) , Iberdrola said.

The complex will be able to produce enough energy to meet 45% of the total electricity consumption of the state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania and it will displace the emission of 1.65 million tons of CO2 per year, the utility added.
