The UK military is objecting to the 457MW Viking Wind Farm on Shetland off northern Scotland, claiming its turbines would interfere with air-defence radar.

Britain’s Ministry of Defence (Mod) lodged the objection with the Scottish Government, which is considering an application from the Viking project company to use taller, more powerful wind turbines at the site on Shetland.

A letter from the MoD claims the 103 turbines “would have a significant and detrimental effect on air-defence operations” at the radar station at Saxa Vord, 62km away from the wind farm site.
