The ‘remote island’ 457MW Viking Wind Farm on Shetland off northern Scotland wants to use 4MW-plus turbines as it prepares to go up against offshore wind projects in the next round of UK government auctions.

Viking has lodged a application with the Scottish Government to amend consents for a maximum tip height of the 103 turbines by 10 metres to 155 metres, with maximum rotor diameter rising by the same amount to 120 metres, allowing it to use "market leading" machines.
