Spain has published far-reaching plans to completely switch away from fossil fuels to run its power system entirely on renewable electricity by 2050 and to fully decarbonise its economy soon afterwards.

The draft climate change and energy transition law proposes to slash Spain's greenhouse gas emissions by 90% when compared to 1990 levels. To achieve this, the Spanish government under socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has committed to installing at least 3GW of wind and solar power capacity annually for the next ten years.
