South Africa hinted at a first foray into offshore wind as its energy minister told an industry conference the sector holds “unexploited opportunities”.

Jeff Radebe said with global capacity growing and costs falling, offshore wind and a sharper focus on solar represent two potential growth areas for the country’s renewables efforts.

“Offshore wind and solar energy are currently not being exploited as we ought to,” Radebe said in a speech to the Windaba 2018 wind industry event in Cape Town, adding that progress in the global offshore wind sector should “serve as an encouragement to put more effort on our ocean economy”.
