Japan’s Electric Power Development (J-Power) and France’s Engie have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to work together and develop power projects, particularly large-scale commercial offshore wind projects.

The partnership will look into the development of offshore wind off Japan, including floating offshore wind, and developing “competitive” new technology for the industry.

In addition, the duo will look at other projects in Japan, Europe and other regions, it said, without providing details.

J-power owns a 25% share of the 860MW Triton Knoll offshore wind farm, which is under development off the east coast of England. It is also working on a 220MW offshore project near Kitakyushu City in the Hibikinada district of Japan.

In April this year, the company announced its goal to develop 1GW of renewable energy by 2025.

Engie has 2.5GW under development and is currently expanding offshore wind power by using floating technologies.
