Wind industry robotics specialist SkySpecs has completed a landmark test check-up of turbine blades at Orsted’s 258MW Burbo Bank Extension project off the UK, using drones to cut inspection time by some 85%.
The fully automated trial run conducted last month, which took close-up images of the 80-metre-long blades on the Liverpool Bay development’s 32 MHI Vestas 8MW V164 machines, reduced inspection time from around two hours to approximately 20 minutes per unit.
