Wind power has played a key role in the Netherlands for centuries, its famous windmills being used to pump water away from low-lying areas and prevent its towns and cities from flooding.

The country has similarly embraced the modern wind turbine, installing 4.3GW of onshore wind — but as one of the most densely populated countries on Earth, it will one day run out of suitable land and is increasingly looking out to sea.
