Governments must enshrine regionally-tailored, international standards for offshore wind’s “entire technology life cycle” to drive the fast-expanding industry from the current installed capacity of 19GW to a potential 500GW by 2050, according to a new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena).

The study offers a detailed analysis of standardisation frameworks developed so far by pace-setting countries including the UK, Denmark and Germany, as well as spotlighting areas where “more work is needed” to advance the sector.
