Canada’s Algonquin Power & Utilities has lowered its ambitions for building new wind capacity in in the US Midwest and backed away from plans to shut a coal plant in Missouri, acknowledging the political challenges of pursuing a coal-to-wind shift in the US heartland.
Last year Algonquin acquired Empire District Electric, a regulated utility based in Joplin, Missouri, that serves several nearby states.
