A Carbon Trust-led joint industry project (JIP) on floating wind has launched the first of a series of sub-projects designed to tackle a range of technical challenges linked to commercial-scale developments of up to 1GW.

The lead-off project, being run by Danish contractor Ramboll, will explore the impact of the increasing power rating of ultra-large turbines on scaling floating foundations, running the rule over models of 6MW, 10MW and 15MW nameplates “as a baseline to evaluate the potential cost savings from adopting larger next generation turbines”.
