TenneT has raised the possibility of building artificial islands in the North Sea earlier than expected to connect wind parks to the UK and the Netherlands, as the transmission system operator (TSO) says an increase of Dutch offshore wind capacity by about 7GW is possible in the 2023-2030 period.

“An artificial island to be constructed in the North Sea between the Netherlands and the UK is a possible solution if direct-current (DC) connections are used instead of alternating-current (AC) connections, as has been done so far,” TenneT says in a release on its 2017 financial statement.
