Renewable energy was barely mentioned as India’s finance minister delivered a Union Budget that commentators said kept a firm eye on national elections next year.

There were no major breaks for wind and solar in the speech delivered by Arun Jaitley, which carried a strong emphasis on measures to assist India’s rural population and agricultural sector.

Among the few renewables-focused proposals was one to help farmers sell excess solar power generated on their land to state-run distribution companies “at reasonably remunerative rates”.
