Chinese competitors could quickly become a threat to the lead European OEMs enjoy in the manufacturing of offshore wind turbines – even in the yet-to-be developed segment of 10MW-plus machines – according to German wind industry groups.

Asked whether European manufacturers will live up to their commitments to develop super-sized offshore turbines needed to push prices down sufficiently for zero subsidy projects, Uwe Knickrehm, managing director at the Offshore Wind Energy Working Group (AGOW), said in the mid-term not only European OEMs will develop those, but also Chinese competitors such as Goldwind.
