A New Jersey lawmaker has introduced a bill requiring that a percentage of electricity sold in the state be from offshore wind in order to support at least 3.5GW of generation by 2030 – the amount sought by Governor-elect Phil Murphy, who takes office Tuesday.

Within 180 days of becoming law, Senate Bill (SB) 811, submitted by Senator Richard Codey, a Democrat, requires the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to establish an offshore wind renewable energy certificate (OREC) programme in support of that goal.
