The European Parliament and Council have reached a provisional agreement to reform the EU’s emission trading system (ETS) for the post-2020 period, which they hope will help the economic block to meet its target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% by 2030 as envisaged under the Paris climate agreement.

Renewables groups, as well as Germany’s environment minister, welcomed the long-awaited deal, but cautioned it cannot supplant effective national climate protection measures.
