A €4m ($4.6m) industry research project looking at key blade-technology enhancements that would help cut the cost of wind energy by a further 4.7% has been launched by a group ten European partners led by the UK Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult.
The Offshore Demonstration Blade (ODB) project, which will focus on innovations including aerodynamic and structural enhancements, blade monitoring systems and blade erosion protection, will use the 7MW Levenmouth demonstration turbine, in Methil, Scotland, with a view to deployment on existing or new offshore machines.
