US electric utility Xcel Energy has awarded contracts to Mortenson Construction and Wanzek Construction to build four wind farms that comprise part of its earlier announced 1.85GW wind power capacity expansion in the Upper Midwest.

Minneapolis-based Xcel, which already has more wind power on its system than any US utility, did not release financial details for either transaction.

Mortenson will build two projects totaling 400MW with 200 wind turbines.
