Japanese-Danish offshore wind turbine maker MHI Vestas has tied up with Clemson University in South Carolina to put the OEM’s V164 9.5MW drive-train through its paces in preparation for a coming wave of major projects off the US east coast.

The 15MW rig, the larger of two switched on at the university’s 82,000-square-foot Energy Innovation Centre facility in 2013/2014, will run testing and verification of the wind turbine’s gearbox and main bearings, under a $35m deal.
