For those reading the auguries for the floating wind industry, it is – in pace Charles Dickens – the best of times and the worst of times.

Last Friday, France’s first floating wind turbine, the EU-backed 2MW FloatGen unit, was launched in Saint-Nazaire. That was not only a boost to the country’s slow-moving offshore energy plans, but also potentially popped the cork on a multi-gigawatt order pipeline at technology developer Ideol that has been building for some time via deals off Ireland, the UK, Japan, Taiwan and France.
