South Africa’s wind sector gave only a qualified welcome to a government pledge to resolve a long-running stand-off over unsigned renewable power deals, citing concerns over plans to renegotiate previously-agreed tariffs for projects.

A refusal by state utility Eskom to sign power purchase agreements (PPAs) mainly relating to Rounds 3.5 and 4 of the REIPPPP procurement scheme has brought the country’s widely-admired renewable tender programme to a halt, prompting calls for the South African government to sort the situation out or risk losing the goodwill of international investors.
