Finland’s VTT Technical Research Centre has started a three-year €2.85m ($3m) project in a bid to demonstrate flexible storage of large amounts of wind and solar power

The so-called BALANCE project, which brings together leading European research institutes in the field of electrochemical conversion, will receive €2.5m in European Commission Horizon 2020 funding.

VTT points to the most significant obstacle for the further integration of renewables into the electricity grid as being the imbalance between their weather-dependent production and general power consumption patterns.
