Power trading and consultancy firms in Argentina are lining up private tenders to contract new renewable energy capacity for the country’s unregulated sector, as soon as the government opens up a market that some believe could reach 1GW a year.

“There is a lot of interest from companies since they can sign contracts for a longer period of time [at lower power prices],” said Omar Díaz, head of energy and natural resources at consultants KPMG in Argentina.
