Variable renewable energy generation doesn’t create ‘hidden’ extra costs for the UK’s power system as some of its detractors have suggested, according to a new E3G report based on analysis from Imperial College.

The report, entitled Plugging the Energy Gap, lays to rest concerns expressed last year by former UK energy secretary Amber Rudd that additional costs are created by renewables, and that the system instead needs ‘baseload’ power in order to operate most economically.
