Earlier this year the French government announced its intention to retender 5.3GW of hydro concessions, spread across the Alps, the Pyrenees and central France.
Former state-owned energy utility EDF currently dominates France’s 23.5GW hydro market – the second largest in Europe – with GDF Suez holding a much smaller share.
The decision from Paris to retender the concessions comes six years after the privatization of EDF and the EU’s firm request that the company open up some of its hydro capacity to competition.
