Although the UK’s Crown Estate has already leased out 11 zones totaling 1.6GW in the Pentland Firth and Orkneys for marine-renewables projects, the Sound of Islay array is the first to be approved in waters governed solely by the Scottish government.
Given its relatively modest size compared to the zones ladled out by the Crown Estate, it is also likely to be the first commercial tidal-stream project built in Scottish waters.
