The PowerBuoy system was deployed in October 2008 at the offshore site approximately one mile off the coast, in 100 feet of water depth. During initial commissioning tests the power produced was in line with predicted levels.
The buoy works by the rise and fall of waves causing it to move freely up and down. Resultant mechanical stroking is converted via a power take-off to drive an electrical generator and that power is transmitted ashore via an underwater cable.
