Say “hybrid” and, for most, thoughts probably turn to a Toyota Prius or other electric/petrol cars. For the global renewables industry, however, the word increasingly refers to a fast-growing number of projects that are wiring together wind, solar and geothermal energy in different combinations, often with battery storage, in a strategic push to drive up plant capacity and smooth electricity output as the world moves towards an increasingly decentralised power system.
