Germany has long been a leader in renewables, building up a world-class wind-power manufacturing sector and pursuing an energy transition that has been an example to the rest of the planet.
But this transition, the Energiewende, is under threat from the political right, and the general election on 24 September may result in a new coalition government with very different ideas about the country’s energy future.
