A 2GW-plus network of grid-scale batteries and electric-vehicle (EV) fast-charging “super-hubs” is due to be installed in the UK over the next six years, and will not cost a penny to the taxpayer.

The £1.6bn ($2bn) subsidy-free project by British start-up Pivot Power — in partnership with National Grid, investment fund Downing LLP, a major international bank and others — will see 45 50MW batteries installed around the country, which, uniquely, will all be connected directly into the high-capacity transmission network, rather than the lower-capacity distribution grid.
