South Africa’s Department of Energy has signed the 27 Renewable Energy Independent Power Procurement Projects (REIPPP), including the Power Purchase Agreements with state utility Eskom, paving the way for 59bn rand ($5bn) in new direct investments in the energy sector.

The Minister of Energy, Jeff Radebe, officially signed the deals on Wednesday after years of delays caused by the former president Jacob Zuma and court action by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA).
